Strategies to Address Childhood Obesity

The summit will conclude with remarks from Elizabeth Majestic, Associate Director
for Program Development at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and
Health Promotion, CDC. There, she is responsible for developing new programs and
liaisons with external partners, including partnerships with the business and healthcare
sectors. Ms. Majestic also oversees the “Steps to a Healthier US” community grant
program.
Previously, she served both as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health
for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and Acting Director of the Office of
Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services. Before that, Ms. Majestic held a variety of other positions within CDC,
including Associate Director for Planning, Evaluation, and Legislation; Deputy Director
of the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH); and Chief of the Special Populations
Program in the Division of Adolescent and School Health.
Strategies to Address Childhood Obesity
The dramatic increase in the number of children that are obese, have developed Type 2 diabetes, and are at risk for other adult-onset chronic diseases is a national concern. This session will highlight strategies that may help to prevent childhood obesity. Future directions to address the epidemic that will be undertaken by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will also be highlighted.
